Match Reports

Round 8: Glen Eira vs Boroondara Eagles - Sunday 15 June 2008

Apologies: Adam, Ashley & Leon

The game opened at a frantic pace with the Falcons putting the early pressure on the Eagles. Five minutes in and Rylie scored with a powerful drive beating the keeper.

At the 8 minute mark, Finn combined brilliantly with Nick who let fly with a long ‘bomb’ that allowed the opposition's defence no chance at all. Our defence were playing solid football on the occasions when the Eagles went forward. None better than Luke’s one hand deflection to save what would have been a certain Eagles goal.

Rylie scored again at the 12 minute mark with a long shot and followed up again at the 18 minute mark with a penalty shot in front of goal which saw Rylie place the ball in the corner of the box for Falcons goal number four.

As per previous weeks, the Falcons were playing well and were looking to pass the ball to a team mate. The back line of Alex, Stephen, Josh, Michael, Patrick and David were all consistently winning the ball and setting up offensive moves for their forwards.  Stephen worried opposition attackers out of the ball on several occasions with close checking defence and persistence.

David, Pat and Josh were proving a real obstacle for the opposition. Alex continued to win a lot of the ball and found his forwards with precision passing. Luke was playing a solid game in the last line of defence, and his long kicking to team-mates was a feature of his game.

Finn, Elliot, Nick, Indika and Eugene were making the most of the supply being delivered by their defenders and were constantly testing the Eagle's defence. The Falcons went in at half time with a convincing 4-0 lead.

The second half saw the Eagles continuing resolutely, however at the 9 minute mark, Rylie goaled again to put the Falcons up 5-0 for what was to be the final score, that, in many ways did not reflect the effort and skills displayed by the opposition in the second half.

As we approach the half-way mark of the season, every member of the Falcons is contributing and it is evident that the team is continuing to improve under Coach Oliver.

Once again Special thanks again to John Sellen for running the lines.

Round 7: Stonnington City vs Glen Eira - Sunday 08 June 2008

Apologies: Adam & Daniel P

A strong compliment of 15 players arrived for the early start against Stonnington City. The game started with both sides testing each other. Stonnington were playing close football with most of the Falcons players covered, however the Falcons were combining well and were looking for teammates up field, looking to pass the ball to teammates in a better position. Rylie combined with Eugene at the five minute mark to present Eugene with a goal opportunity which he duly converted. A great start by the Falcons!

Luke was protecting the goals and repelled several early attacks from Stonnington.  Alex, Patrick, Stephen and Elliot were proving to be an impediment for the Stonnington attacks as well as linking up with Rylie, Nick and Finn. Eugene combined with Rylie at the 14 minute mark, with Rylie making a long sustained run and scoring a strong goal. Coach Oliver rested four players at the 15 minute mark bringing on Josh, Indika, Michael and Leon into the game. Stonnington continued to look for a way to goal, but could not penetrate the Falcons defence. Nick combined with Rylie at the 25 minute mark with Rylie converting with yet another goal – giving the Falcons a half time leading score line of 0-3.

Second Half: Stonnington attacked and were rewarded with a goal at the 8 minute mark. The Falcons answered at the ten minute mark, with a deft deflection from Indika finding the back of the net. The game then became a battle of the defences, with Stonnington packing their back line, resulting in the Falcons finding it harder to get their free flowing game working as they did in the first half. Stonnington scored again at the 25 minute mark to bring the score line back to 2-4.  Elliot, Ash, Michael, Leon, Josh and David were all prominent and contributed to the win.

In summary, another good win to the Falcons. Coach Oliver continues to fine tune the team’s skills and fitness levels in preparation for some testing encounters ahead.

Special thanks again to John Sellen for running the lines.

Round 6: Glen Eira vs Mooroolbark - Sunday 01 June 2008

Apologies: Daniel P & Leon

And so the Falcons made a welcome return to Lords Reserve on a murky Sunday morning. Drama was the order of the day as the Referee for our game failed to arrive. Thank you to our President Daniel for officiating in the first half. Further drama included the absence of a match ball. Enter Ian Kemp and the problem was resolved. Finally, our opposition only had ten players, and after deliberation it was decided that the Falcons would play with ten Players also.

The game commenced at a solid pace with both teams testing each other out. Seven minutes in Rylie goaled with some deft footwork. However, Mooroolbark replied at the 16 minute mark.  This was not to be a stroll in the fog. Five minutes later David goaled with Nick scoring at the 30 minute mark. Half time and the Falcons went in with a 3 -1 lead.

The second half saw Rylie power home a long shot for a goal.  Elliot was on the end of an Alex corner at the 13 minute mark for a much celebrated goal. Rylie goaled at the 15 minute mark after a penalty kick was sent to the back of the net. The 25 minute mark saw Nick goal as a result of some fine team work between Fin and Eugene.  Ash scored a goal on the 28 minute mark with the Falcons running out winners 10 goals to 1.

Aside from winning, the team is playing well together and is always looking to pass the ball to players in a better position. Coach Oliver’s drills such as penalty kicks are now creating scoring opportunities during games.  The win was the culmination of a solid effort from all players.  Well done boys!

Special thanks to Chris McMillan and John Sellen for running the lines.

Round 5: Croydon City Arrows vs Glen Eira - Sunday 25 May 2008

Apologies: Daniel P & Daniel R

A hat trick of wins with a percentage boosting 1-10 score line over ninth placed Croydon City Arrows last week.  Big moves also on the ladder gaining three spots to third position and only a win between us and top placed Nunawading City. Congratulations team on yet another great effort.

Special thanks again to Bruce Houghton for running the lines.

Editor’s Note: Our usual journo Michael Hyrons is a tad busy this week so we’ve given him the week off and invited a guest writer. Thank you Patrick for your contribution – written as a news report for school. We’re always open for further contributions from any of the team.

News Report

Glen Eira Creams Croydon 1-10

The Glen Eira Falcons impressed with a massive 1-10 win over Croydon City Arrows last Sunday at Croydon’s home ground. The Glen Eira team from the U/14 East division had controlled the whole match with 112 touches to 81.

Falcons captain Rylie kicked the first goal of the game in a matter of minutes by taking a shot from just inside the box. The Falcons then followed through to enter the second half with a 1-7 lead with Rylie kicking a massive 5 goals while Alex and Indika kicking one a piece in an eventful first half.

Croydon came out with all they had in the start of the second half but it was not enough as the Falcons strong defence and keeper Adam was too good and stopped all attempts.

The game finished with Glen Eira winning 1-10. Coach Barry said 'We played a solid game with our defence holding strong and our midfield running well'. Final Goal scorers were Rylie with an amazing 5 goals, Alex 2, Falcons new player, Eugene with an impressive 2 and Indika 1.

Round 4: Glen Eira vs Riverside Raiders - Sunday 18 May 2008

Apologies: Daniel P, Josh and Leon
Score Line: Half Time 4-1  Full Time 4-2
Goals: Rylie 3 (4’, 7’, 23’), Finn 1 (13’)

Our Duncan Mackinnon home ground is normally played on the northern pitch, but this particular Sunday morning it resembled an Olympic white water kayak course. A mains water pipe had burst on the high ground, flooding more than 70% of our normally dry pitch. A quick decision by Barry Oliver (Committee man on duty for the day) and ably assisted by Chris McMillan and others present for the 9:00am U12 Girls game made fast work of relocating to the southern pitch – marking the ground in record time (the 18-yard box was some what distorted!) but it did the job.

The girls were under way just 10 minutes late and the pitch held up for the full day, including our 12:30pm match. It’s amazing what a little team spirit can achieve. Wavy touchlines aside, the Falcons faced the third-placed Riverside Raiders team for an exciting match. Adam showed good early form as the first half goalie, stopping a hot Raider attack, but within minutes the Falcons were themselves peppering the goals at the other end.

Following a centre play, Finn produced a lovely header onto Rylie who dodged three Raider players for a simple tap into goal.  Moments later an Alex/Rylie cross onto Finn just went wide of the net, but quickly followed with a Rylie/Finn double play allowing Rylie to find the gap for goal number two.

Five minutes on and a long side throw-in by Rylie found Nick in the open, good control and pass hit Finn (he’s hot today!) on the run who somehow pushed through scrambling Raider players to hit the back of the net. 3-0 and we’ve only been playing 13 minutes!

But it wasn’t just the forwards getting into the action. Adam demonstrated his long kick capability, regularly finding his target beyond the centre line. Patrick, Alex, Stephen and our new team member Eugene were working well together controlling the defence and pushing into mid-field and beyond. Elliott and David on the wing and solid work by Luke earlier were all providing great contributions. Elliott granted us an exciting moment when he took control of a ball via a down the line throw in – a magnificent long run and shot for goal just going wide. Stephen also provided an excellent example of persistent tackling, winning the ball and pushing a pass across to Patrick whose deft touch gave Nick the opportunity to run and create a Falcons corner opportunity. And what a corner it was. Alex’s perfectly placed high cross sat nicely for a rising Rylie, heading into the net for Falcon’s fourth goal.

Finn almost replicated the action a few minutes later, this time with a Rylie corner and a brilliant Finn header, unfortunately lifting above the bar. With half time looming, the Raiders were not finished, playing down the wing and centring – deflecting off players for a virtually unstoppable goal. Half time score line 4-1.

The Raiders proved a little tougher in the second half, this time peppering our goals and keeping Luke on his goal-keeper toes – showing confidence and making many difficult saves. Nick had moved into defence and on regular occasions combined with Eugene and Michael to ensure any Raider attacks were pushed to the side. Daniel R had a short stint and did well, Indika also continued his solid form shown last week and Ash featured in numerous plays to provide positive mid field pressure. Finn had his chance with a 1:1 contest with the Raiders goalie but found the side post instead. Rylie fired a rocket in from centre, brilliantly saved by the keeper but a last moment fumble gave Alex a rebound opportunity but some how going skywards over the bar.

Despite our comfortable lead, the Raiders should be congratulated for maintaining their attack - and it paid off with a open forward line and an attacking Luke – enabling the Raider striker to go high for their second and final goal for the match. A solid 4-2 win and a team that is working better together each week.

Well done team! Special thanks to Chris McMillan for running the lines this week.

Round 3: East Bentleigh vs Glen Eira - Sunday 11 May 2008

Apologies: Daniel R, Josh, David, Leon
Score Line: Half Time 0-2 Full Time 1-4

The Falcons made the short journey down East Boundary Rd, for the 'local derby' on Mother’s Day. The Falcons were quickly out of the blocks, with Indika taking a pass from Alex and scoring with only 2 minutes elapsed.

At the 7 minute mark Finn narrowly missed with a header. Even at this early point the Falcons were generating tremendous drive and opportunities from defence. Luke, Stephen; Daniel P and Ash were proving a hard line to crack and were constantly creating opportunities for Nick who was prominent, as were Elliot, Finn and Rylie.

At the 12 minute mark Coach Oliver brought Patrick on for Elliot, who took a well deserved break. At the 22 minute mark Patrick, Nick and Finn all combined to pass to Indika who was in scintillating form and scored his second goal for the half. The Falcons went into the half time break with a commanding 2-0 lead.

The second half saw Adam guarding the goal, with Luke turning his hand to defence. Indika and Steven were rested after their solid contributions in the first half. The defence continued to play disciplined, attacking football, creating further opportunities for the forwards.

East Bentleigh scored at the 8 minute mark, a timely reminder to the Falcons that the game was still alive. At the 16 minute mark Rylie scored after making a long run and cracking the East Bentleigh defence. Score line Falcons 3 East Bentleigh 1.

Rylie repeated the dose not long after with another long run. At the bell Falcons 4 defeated East Bentleigh 1. The Falcons continued there form from the previous week with all players contributing. The team is also receiving solid drive from the new players – Finn, the 'Dynamic Duo' Adam and Luke, Indika, Ash and Michael.

Well done team! Special thanks to John Sellen for a great job running the lines.

Round 2: Nunawading City vs Glen Eira - Sunday 04 May 2008

Apologies: Leon, Indika, David
Score Line: Half Time 0-1 Full Time 1-1

The team travelled to Mahoneys Road knowing that Nunawading had kicked 12 goals in their victory over Mooroolbark last week.  The game commenced at a frenetic pace with Josh, Finn and Adam (goalie) amongst the play. Two minutes into the game saw Rylie testing out the opposition’s defence and narrowly missing.

This was quickly followed by a well constructed piece of play from Elliot and Nick connecting with Rylie who again just missing the net. Even at this early point the Falcons looked a different side to last week, with players looking for team mates in a better position before passing the ball.

We were on the attack again with Nick, Daniel R and Josh involved in a well constructed build up that saw Josh take a shot but just wide. Alex was proving to be an impenetrable force back in defence, providing strong rebounds, ably assisted by Daniel P, Ashley, Michael and Adam. Finn and Patrick were getting plenty of the ball and providing opportunities for Nick, Rylie and Daniel R.

The 15 minute mark saw Rylie make a long sustained run and hitting the back of the net.  Finn, Alex, Daniel P, Ashley and Michael all continued to hold out Nunawading, while Adam brilliantly saved a certain goal from a Nunawading striker. The famous Glen Eira 'Wall of Death' was constructed and repelled a Nunawading penalty, featuring some dazzling footwork from Adam and deflection by Nick. And so at the half time break Glen Eira went in with a one goal lead.

The second half saw Luke replace Adam as goalie and Stephen giving Daniel R a well deserved break. Michael made a long run and then defended, Reilly continued to attack the goals and narrowly missed with a header just over the cross bar. Luke saved what would have been a certain goal when the opposition was awarded a penalty at the 20 minute mark. Michael persisted and eventually prevailed over his opponent and cleared the ball. Alex continued to clear the ball from defence with long kicks setting up attacking moves.

The 22 minute mark saw another header from Rylie that just missed and went over the cross bar, not long after this the opposition goaled to level at one all, just minutes before full time and the game ending on that score. The Falcons set up many attacks from defence and looked for team mates before passing the ball, a dramatic improvement from last week.

Well done boys! Thank you to Bruce Houghton for linesman duty this week. Great job! Thanks also to Richard for the half time snakes.  The boys loved them!

Round 1: Glen Eira vs Richmond at Lord Reserve - Sunday 27 Apr 2008

The game opened with both teams sounding out each other and both sides ‘peppering’ the goals. 20 minutes into the first half saw a well constructed play, culminating in Rylie just missing a shot from 15 metres out.

At the 25 minute mark Alex combined with Rylie and Patrick who passed to Nick who narrowly missed the net. Luke one of our two new goalies was in the play and doing a fine job repelling the Richmond attacks. Indika was also in the play early for the Falcons. Richmond scored two late goals at the 35 and 37 minute marks to go in at half time with a two goal lead.

The second half saw Adam take up the Goal Keeper position and he was straight into the game with some good saves. At the 15 minute mark Rylie made a long run, taking on several opponents and narrowly missing the goal.

Glen Eira were awarded a penalty on the goal Line and converted after a deflection found Rylie’s boot. Daniel P illustrated that persistence pays as he harassed a Richmond forward who was in possession of the ball and ultimately worried his opponent out of it. Stephen, Ashley, Josh, Michael, Finn, Daniel R and David all contributed over the course of the match.

The Game ended with Richmond 5 goals to Glen Eira 1 goal. Coach Barry Oliver has identified some areas for the team to work on in the ensuing weeks, including general fitness and conditioning. However the team showed enough over the duration of the match to indicate they will be a competitive unit over the year.

Thank you to Richard Walls for linesman duty this week.
