Under 15 Phoenix Girls - End of Season Report 2007

This year saw a large squad of 17 girls taking to the soccer pitch representing Glen Eira Junior Soccer Club. 11 of the team were ‘old hands’ from last season and there were 6 new players. David Higgins continued in his calm and enthusiastic style as coach.

The team started its season at the Total Girl Tournament in Ballarat in March, where the girls who were able to go, had lots of fun and laughs despite the wintery conditions. The end of the season proper in the FFV Milo Girls Metro 15 B league saw the team ranked 6th out of 10 with a goal difference of only – 15 - a very credible performance.

There were many highlights to the season with all players showing great improvements in their skills and team work.  Perhaps one remarkable weekend was when David delivered his young daughter, (now named Kiri), in the driveway of his home on Saturday and on Sunday the team held one of the top teams to a nil all draw – shame no one scored though, as the first scorer was to have had naming rights for the new arrival!  Thanks to Laura for her support this season too.

Well done to Megan, Maree, Erin, Jordon, Chantal, Eliza, Camille, Natalie, Amey Caitlin, Alex, Anthea, Gabby, Natalie, Ellen, Lauren and Emma and of course their fabulous parents!

Match Reports:

Glen Eira U15 Girls Phoenix vs Ashburton - Sunday 22 June 2007

The last time we met Ashburton we had a good 1 nil win and the pressure was on the team to see if we could win again this time at home. The girls started very well against the wind, with a couple of excellent chances at goals in the early part of the first half. Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalise on our many chances, and in a break against play Ashburton was able to score a goal on a clear breakaway with the wind behind them. Luckily for us the girls played with real spirit and did not let Ashburton get any further goals, largely due to some courageous goal keeping by Nat. We went into the half time break 1 nil down. There was an air of expectancy around the ground as in the second half we would have the wind behind us and there was a strong belief by all players that we would be able to break through and score.

Early in the second half it happened with some great team play by Jordan passing to Lauren who was right in front of goal and was able to score! One all! But now the girls had a sniff of victory they were not going to stop at one goal. Soon both Nat and Megan had scored wonderful goals bring the score line to 3 – 1. The girls were able to close down the game and finish with an excellent and hard fought win. Great team playing by all.

Glen Eira U15 Phoenix Girls vs Whitehorse at Lords Reserve - Sunday 10 June 2007

How close was that to a score to us in the first minute of the game? Unfortunately that was probably the closest we got to scoring for the rest of the game. The ball was sent forward into attack on many an occasion with Megan reading the play well and Gabby and Erin getting many touches. We just didn’t seem to have our kicking boots on. Our defence was solid in the first half with the ball repelled many times by Ellen and Natalie.
Chantal and Eliza were timing their kicks well and Camille and Jordan were determined in going in hard to get possession of the ball. Anthea showed good control with her ball skills and Maree, Natalie and Alex were doing plenty of running as the ball was quickly going from end to end. Whitehorse got on top in the second half and went to a 3-0 lead. Our girls tried hard all day and even a guest appearance by “Whisky” the dog couldn’t change our luck.

Friendly game U15 Phoenix Girls versus Noble Park Harriers - Sun 29 Apr 2007

It was good to see we had just about a full squad with 14 players turning up eager to get an early start to what looks like is going to be a long season. We got off to a bit of a slow start, but the pitch was perhaps a bit on the small side and very slippery after heavy rain earlier in the day. Lauren and Camille worked very hard in midfield for most of the game with Camille coming off early after getting a kick just below the knee. Erin and Megan ran their socks off upfront with Erin scoring a penalty that I heard someone on the side lines say “a professional keeper would not have stopped that”. Megan also scored a right foot shot just near the end to tie things up 2-2.

A big thank you to Alex for taking over keeping duties for the day and well done to new girls Chantal, Caitlin and Anthea - I think you will have no problems slotting into our team. Thank you to Lindsay for help in the organisation of the game and to Mums and Dads for getting them there.
