Senior Mens Phoenix End of Season Report 2007

After a late start to the season due to the drought, we finally had our opening game at the beginning of May against our annual first round opponents Knox Strikers. We secured a comfortable 4-2 win and went on to beat McKillop 1-0 in round two. Someone once said it was 'in the luck of the draw', but this season we had no luck recording six draws, in games which we dominated, but the stubborn piece of leather would not go into the back of the net.

The whole team played outstandingly well with first time passing and real teamwork, our midfield and defenders in particular controlled most of the games and conceding only 13 goals from open play in 18 matches. We scored 32 goals and only received two yellow cards for the whole season. This left us at the end of the year in a very respectable fourth position on the ladder, four points behind the team who finished second. We had some outstanding performances, drawing with Sherbrooke (who won our Division) with only ten players and comfortably defeating Eastern United who also gained promotion. The players proved that they are capable of mixing it with the best with their 'never say die attitude'.

It would be unfair to single out any individual player as each one gave their all and wore the Glen Eira Phoenix logo over their hearts as a badge of honour and respect. Thanks to Marc Cheong for acting as Manager, to Aidan Jamison as assistant Manager, to Mark Turner for helping to organise training and a big word of thanks to the small but hardworking group of individuals who ensured that we had a home ground to play on each week.
