Ladies Phoenix 2007
Season Report
The 2007 season for the
GEJSC Ladies team was an exciting and challenging experience.
Coaching this team was
rewarding for me as it was I believe for them. The ladies have matured
into a well accomplished team now and are to be congratulated.
At the start of the
season, there were mixed reactions as most of the girls were without
experience or knowledge of the game. Teaching them would be a challenge
and to all their credit, my job was pleasing to say extremely
satisfying as they all participated 100%.
We had a slow start and
with half the season over, we had managed one draw and one win.
The second half would
turn out to be very encouraging, as we came away with five wins.
All in all, I’m very
proud of these girls and they should be as proud themselves.
We all had a lot
of fun and I’m certain all the girls will be keen to get back together
again in 2008.
Here are the results of
our draw and wins for 2007:
- Mitcham 1 vs Glen
Eira 1 (Scorer Laura)
- Lilydale 1 vs Glen
Eira 3 (Scorers Jennifer 2 Natasha1)
- Glen Eira 4 vs
Mitcham 3 (Scorers Jennifer 3 Laura 1)
- Glen Eira 3 vs
Healesville 2 (Scorers Laura 2 Jennifer 1)
- Glen Eira 2 vs
Western Suburbs 1 (Scorer Jennifer 2)
- Glen Eira 8 vs
Lilydale 1 (Scorers Laura 5 Jennifer 2 Merryn 1)

Match Reports (reverse chrnonological order):
Round 11: Glen Eira
Phoenix Ladies vs Mitcham Sparks - Saturday 04 August 2007
Score: Glen Eira 4,
Mitcham 3
Congratulations to the GE
Ladies Phoenix team in winning a tough match against a resistant
Mitcham team.
The girls played some
exciting football and were in control for most of the game. A great hat
trick by Jennifer Hogan in the second half was a superb effort. A well
executed goal by Laura and a disciplined defence consisting of Sasha,
Elyse, Cait & Jess. Jess played a fantastic game and has really
grown with confidence.
Highlights:
- Jennifer's Hat trick
- Jessica's solid
work in defence
- The entire defence
- with their discipline control and understanding of the off side rule
Best Players: Jennifer, Jessica, Caitlin, Sasha, Elyse
PS: On behalf of the
Ladies team, a very big thanks to Geoff (Aquamax Sponsor) for providing
the ladies with track suit tops.

Round 9: Glen Eira
Phoenix Ladies vs Berwick Ladies team - Saturday 14 July 2007
Score: Glen Eira 1,
Berwick 8
It wasn't a bad match
apart from the score. The GE ladies team were very competitive for the
first half hour. Then things went a bit flat and the opposition turned
on their turbo boost and played some good football. Though the GE girls
tried hard, they were out bustled by the bigger, more physical and
older girls. (Average age 43). A lesson learnt by the GE team, that you
have to be quick in thinking and team effort a must.
Highlights:
- Merryn being a
nuisance in front of the keeper, received a penalty (a wise man told
her to do so)
- Laura's missed
penalty, just! Great save by the opposition keeper.
- Our "WALL" - what
wall? Need to get that wall built really quick when facing a free kick
in defence.
- Hint - a player
should stand over the ball whilst the defence sets up the wall
Best Players: Laura,
Jennifer, Rachael, Natasha, Sasha
Next game at Yarra Valley
(Snow Territory) 1:00 pm. Please leave early as it's a far
hike.

Round 8:
Glen Eira Phoenix Ladies vs Sherbrooke Lyrebirds - Saturday 07 July 2007
Score: Sherbrooke
Lyrebirds 3, Glen Eira Phoenix Ladies 0
A miserable day with a
miserable result.
A close match until the
Glen Eira girls were caught napping and a lack of concentration led to
a score that really did not live up to the game. The girls were all
competitive in a wet and cold day, and played well enough to keep the
opposition at bay, but some slight defensive errors opened the door for
the Sherbrooke attack and they took advantage of that and ended up
wining by a 3 goal margin.
Highlights:
The weather.
No girls didn't come out
clean - the washing machines would be working overtime.
Not being biased, but the
referee was an ice block with some of the decisions he made.
After the game in the
change room, Monique let all know how she felt about the referee.
And the referee walking
straight into her spraying.
Best Players: Sammy T,
Caitlin, Laura, Gabi

Round 7:
Glen Eira Phoenix Ladies vs Lilydale Eagles Ladies - Saturday 23rd June
2007
Score: Glen Eira 3,
Lilydale Eagles 1
Scorer: Jennifer 2,
Natasha 1
A first win for the Glen
Eira Ladies team was well deserved as they all played a fantastic game.
They were unlucky not to
have scored a bucket full as shots by Sami, Jennifer hit the post and
Merryn & Natasha had shots saved by the keeper. We also had a
penalty missed but still had a good enough score.
Highlights:
- Gabi kept well in
goals with encouraging calling out of "Keepers Ball"
- Great dribbling
goal from Natasha
- Two well taken
goals by Jennifer, total of 4 goals now
- Excellent defending
by Rachael
- Great ground
coverage, chasing and suppling from Merryn
- Sami's quick
running in attack causing problems for defenders (understands the
offside rule now!)
Best Players: Natasha, Jennifer, Rachael,
Merryn.

Round 6: Glen Eira
Phoenix Ladies vs Western United Ladies - Saturday 16 June 2007
Score: Glen Eira 1,
Western United Ladies 2
Scorer: Jennifer
The Glen Eira girls were
unlucky not have come out with a draw, in a match that was pretty
evenly balanced. The girls played well in the second half and were
unlucky not to have scored from attempts from Natasha & Jennifer.
Jennifer had a great game on the right wing and scored a terrific goal
in dribbling pass 2 or 3 defenders and slotting the ball pass the
keeper.
Brave play by Elyse led
to an awful head collision, that side lined Elyse for the rest of the
game.
Elyse was taken to
hospital for routine checks and thankfully she came out with no
problems.
Great goal keeping from
Gabi, and Mill in her position at throw in's (paid off in training
sessions).
Highlights: Ground
covering from Laura, ran all day.
Great dribbling & shot on goal from Natasha.
Fantastic keeping from Gabi with her calling out (Keepers ball)
Brave play from Elyse, thank God she's OK
Best Players: Gabi,
Laura, Jennifer, Natasha Rachael.

Round 5: Glen Eira
Phoenix Ladies vs Mooroolbark Ladies - Saturday 02 June 2007
Score: Mooroolbark 14,
Glen Eira 0
With only 9 players
starting the game, the Glen Eira Ladies team were up with a mighty
challenge.
Up against a Mooroolbark
squad of 16 or so, our girls tried their best but couldn't hold off a
team of 16 girls.
I need not talk about the
Mooroolbark girls, our girls were all but positive of playing with 9
players,
and they knew that the
task was beyond them, but their hearts were big and played to the very
last minute.
I'm very proud of these 9
girls and they deserve all credit for facing up to a very tough
challenge.
Highlights: All 9 girls
playing for their club on a very difficult challenge.
Best Players: Gabi,
Rachael, Sasha, Elyse, Jessica, Laura, Sammy T, Sammy N, Merryn.

Round 4: Glen Eira
Phoenix Ladies vs Healesville Ladies -
Saturday 26 May 2007
Score: Glen Eira 1 -
Healesville 2
Scorer: Jennifer H
An unlucky result, which
should have been a first win for the Glen Eira Ladies Team.
Started the game really
well playing with confidence. Somehow the girls lost a bit of momentum
and struggled to keep the Healesville ladies at bay. Though Glen Eira
persisted in the second half, were unlucky to have a goal disallowed by
Elyse. A great goal scored by Jennifer kept the girls in the game and
the last 20 minutes were pounding the Healesville goal area but could
not manage to salvage a draw.
I think the girls now
know what they must produce to win a game and that is to play for 90
minutes, and if they play like the last 20 minutes of yesterday's game,
it won't be long till they score a win.
Game highlights:
Nice turn from Monique
(aka Kaka from AC Milan)
Great goal from Jennifer,
no keeper could save that shot.
Bad luck Elyse - would
have been a nice goal.
Massive throw in's from
Laura (worth a free kick)
Best Players: Hanna,
Elyse, Monique, Laura

Round 3: Glen Eira
Phoenix Ladies vs North Blackburn Phoenix Ladies - Sat 19 May
2007
Score: Nth Blackburn 4 -
Glen Eira 0
Playing the top team was
a pretty tough experience for our girls as they bravely went down 4-0.
It could have been more,
but great defending by the defence lead by Natasha, with Elyse, Sasha,
Rachael, Jess and Caitlin held the Nth Blackburn Phoenix to a minimum
score.
We are improving each
week and it won't be long before a win is on the board.
Best Players:
Natasha, Elyse, Rachael, Sasha
Highlights:
- Great solo run by
Elyse from defence to the forward zone.
- Gabi improving her
keeping, by moving off her line towards the opposition and kicking the
ball excellently.
- Once again
fantastic defending and chasing from Natasha
- Sasha's heading and
a debut header from Sammy N

Round
1 : Glen Eira Phoenix Ladies vs ? - Sat 05 May 2007
Unfortunately, we lost
our first match 0-4, though we only had 11 girls without any subs.
We played pretty well
and held them to a 0-1 at half time.
