The
Glen Eira Junior Soccer Club - 'Friendship, Fun, Family and Football'
The Glen Eira Junior
Soccer club was formed in December 2002 as a community based club with
no ethnic base. It is not an elite club and every player is given
the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability. The
Constitution was formulated and passed by all members in the first
season and clearly states that the Club does not grade its
players/teams. The focus of the Club is on participation for all,
enjoyment of soccer as a sport and, although winning is great, success
is not measured by where a team finishes but on sportsmanship, a sense
of fair play and the respect of others and these attributes are to be
encouraged and nurtured.
The Committee of
Management the takes pride in presenting the Season 2007 in review
which has been dominated by the drought. Our fifth season has been a
very challenging one and the Committee has continued to work hard on
the Club’s behalf facing many challenges to ensure that we have
been able to have access to playing grounds. At the beginning of the
season there was a real doubt that a season would take place due to the
drought and through careful management we have ensured that a full
season of soccer has been achieved for all players.
Training at Duncan
Mackinnon Reserve has also been less than ideal with our allocation
being only Monday and Tuesday – certainly not ideal days – and
Wednesday at Caulfield Park on a pitch with no lights and not within
easy travel distance for many parents. Ever resourceful, the Club built
extra portable lights which provided access to the previous dark areas
of Duncan Mackinnon Reserve to enable more teams to train. However,
especially for the older team the lack of training facilities no doubt
had an effect on their season.
Our numbers have further
continued their steady increase to close to 500 players which resulted
in 31 teams including 7 all girls teams and our two wheelchair teams
competing in either the Football Federation of Victoria, the Victorian
Churches Soccer Association or the Bayside United Junior Soccer
Competition plus our Goal Kick Program.
A number of our coaches
have attained their Junior Level Accreditation and we congratulate them
all as they join an ever increasing number of qualified coaches of the
Club. A contingent of Glen Eira girls attended the all girls Total
Tournament in Ballarat again this year and great fun was had by all who
attended the weekend of soccer.
On a very sad note, one
of the Club’s founding members and Secretary Grahame Horsfield passed
away in late 2006. Grahame put in many long hours to set up the Club on
a sound basis and his contribution certainly has been
invaluable.
The Committee would like
to take this opportunity to recognise and express our appreciation to
the following who have contributed in their own way to the success of
the Club:
- Tyrone Barclay and
David Higgins for yet another outstanding success with the Goal Kick
Program – along with all the wonderful assistant coaches and the
support of the parents
- To all the Coaches,
Assistants and Managers who have performed magnificently yet again both
on and off the pitch. Your time and all your efforts are very much
appreciated
- All those parents
who helped in the canteen, it could not run without you and a very big
and special thank you to Julie Gopel, who stocked and managed the
canteen despite the arrival of young Kiri her second child
- All our sponsors
and supporters who have most generously assisted the club during the
season
- To Frank
Weerdenburg for his tireless efforts every weekend preparing the
grounds and all the helpers who marked the lines, set up and took in
the goals, nets etc. each weekend
- To our junior
referees at Lord Reserve on Saturdays who have done a sterling job
throughout the season especially with the early 9 am start with some of
the Rooball teams and we hope they continue to develop their refereeing
careers
- To Tom Zeglinas who
applies for our grants with such tremendous success
- To Michael Chan for
all his work on our Website, which he is continuing to develop
- To all parents and
players who have taken such a tremendous interest in the Club and
assisted where neededWe wish
you all a happy and safe Summer season and look forward to seeing you
all back for yet another action packed year with the Glen Eira Junior
Soccer Club in 2008.
